SOBI Connect at The Hunter Museum

SOBI CONNECT was an immersive, interactive art experience created in collaboration with the Hunter Museum of American Art in response to The Hunter Invitational V exhibition. Designed as a roaming gallery activation, the event invited audiences to engage with art beyond observation through a series of live artist-led stations positioned throughout the exhibition.

Each participating local artist was paired with a featured exhibition artist and tasked with creating a multidisciplinary response inspired by the work on view. Through sound, movement, collage, textile work, and participatory installations, guests were encouraged to create, experiment, and contribute alongside the artists in real time.

Gallery Activations

Picking Wildflowers

By Darcie Denton

Picking Wildflowers an interactive art installation created in response to the work of exhibition artists, Katie Hargrave and Meredith Laura Lynn, reflects on the relationship between humans and beauty, especially that of the natural world.

This experience invited our guests to reflect on their own relationship with beauty and what instincts they may feel or act upon when encountering it.

What do you take, what do you give, and how do your actions affect yourself and others?

Beneath & Buried

Performed by PROVIDENCE Newson Dance Company

Beneath & Buried is an interactive movement installation inspired by and titled after the original work of exhibition artist , Althea Murphy-Price whose work examines the intersections of femininity, racial identity, and adornment.

Developed in collaboration with local dancers and company members of PROVIDENCE Newson Dance Company, A’maya Collins and Serenity Bester, alongside PROVIDENCE Artistic Director Crystal Newson, the experience translated movement vocabulary from the company’s performance work into an audience-driven installation.

The installation invited audiences to engage with these themes as active participants, shaping the performance in real time through prompts and gestures.

Reflection

Facilitated by Rhyme N Chatt

Responding to the work of exhibition artist Craig Drennen’s exploration of failure, unfinished work, and the lessons that emerge from disappointment, Rhyme N Chatt facilitated a participatory writing station inviting guests to reflect on their own experiences with failure and transformation.

Drawing inspiration from Timon of Athens, a play considered unfinished and unsuccessful in Shakespeare’s lifetime, this station encouraged visitors to reconsider failure not as an endpoint, but as a space for growth, reflection, and possibility.

Love Language

By Briah Gober

Responding to exhibition artist, Jerushia Graham’s call to imagine a more compassionate world, Briah Gober invited guests to reflect on the images within the exhibition and consider the question: What does love look like to you?

Participants had the opportunity to recreate moments or gestures inspired by the original artwork or create their own expressions of love through pose, movement, or connection with others, while Briah captured these moments using a Polaroid camera.

These images were then displayed in the gallery during the duration of the event and were later given to participants as a keepsake.
